Introducing AXR: Autonomous Exploitation and Remediation
Every security category that exists today stops at detection. AXR is the category for systems where agents bridge the gap between finding and fixing.
We looked for a category that described what MindFort does. We couldn't find one.
There are categories for scanning. Categories for pen testing. Categories for DAST, SAST, SCA, CSPM, ASM, and dozens of other acronyms. Every one of them describes a tool that finds problems. None of them describe a system that also fixes them.
That gap is the entire problem. Security teams don't struggle because they lack detection tools. They struggle because detection is only half the job. The other half—actually exploiting findings to prove they're real, then remediating them—still falls on humans. And humans can't keep up.
So we're defining a new category: AXR — Autonomous Exploitation and Remediation.
What AXR is
Put simply: AXR is a system where AI agents find real, exploitable vulnerabilities and then fix them. End to end. Continuously.
That's two distinct capabilities working together:
Autonomous Exploitation — Agents that test your applications the way a skilled pen tester would. They don't just scan for known CVEs. They map your attack surface, probe authentication and authorization logic, chain findings together, and prove that vulnerabilities are actually exploitable in your specific environment. This is adversarial testing, not pattern matching.
Autonomous Remediation — The same agents that found the vulnerability fix it. They generate code patches and open pull requests. They correct cloud misconfigurations. They file tickets with full context into Jira or Linear. Then they re-test to confirm the fix actually works. The vulnerability doesn't just get reported—it gets resolved.
The key word is "autonomous." This is not automation in the way a scanner is automated. A scanner runs predefined rules against your systems. AXR agents reason about your environment, adapt as they learn, and make decisions about how to attack and how to fix without a human directing every step. You set the scope and the guardrails. The agents do the work.
How security actually works today
To understand why AXR needs to exist, look at how most organizations actually handle security testing and remediation. It's a workflow stitched together from disconnected tools, manual coordination, and a lot of wasted time.
It usually looks something like this:
Step 1: Run your scanners. DAST tools hit your running applications. SAST analyzes source code. SCA checks your dependencies. Maybe you have a CSPM tool watching your cloud configuration. Each tool runs on its own schedule, produces its own findings in its own format, and dumps them into its own dashboard. On a good week, a mid-size application generates hundreds of findings across these tools. On a bad week, thousands.
Step 2: Triage. A security engineer now has to look at all of those findings and figure out which ones matter. Many are false positives—the scanner flagged something that looks like a vulnerability but isn't actually exploitable in context. Many are duplicates—the same underlying issue reported by three different tools in three different ways. Many are low-severity noise that doesn't warrant action. This triage process is entirely manual, and it's where a huge amount of security engineering time goes. It's not uncommon for a team to spend more hours triaging scanner output than doing anything else.
Step 3: The annual pen test. Once or twice a year, you bring in a pen testing firm. They spend a few weeks testing your application manually. They find things the scanners missed—business logic flaws, authentication bypasses, chained exploits. They hand you a PDF report. The findings are real and validated, but the report is a snapshot of a single moment. By the time you've read it, your application has changed. And you won't get another test for six to twelve months.
Step 4: File tickets. The validated findings—from both scanners and the pen test—get turned into tickets. Jira, Linear, whatever your team uses. Each ticket needs context: what the vulnerability is, where it is, how to reproduce it, why it matters, and what a fix might look like. Writing good tickets takes time. Writing bad ones wastes the engineering team's time downstream.
Step 5: Wait. This is where the process breaks down. Engineering teams have roadmaps. They're building features, shipping product, hitting deadlines. Security tickets compete with everything else for attention. Critical findings might get prioritized. High-severity ones go into the backlog. Medium and low? They sit. Industry data consistently shows mean time to remediate (MTTR) for critical vulnerabilities measured in weeks. For non-critical findings, it's often months. Some tickets never get resolved at all.
Step 6: Fix, maybe. When an engineer does pick up a security ticket, they have to context-switch from whatever they were building, understand the vulnerability, figure out the right fix, implement it, test it, and get it through code review. If the original ticket lacked sufficient context—which is common—they spend time going back to the security team for clarification. The round-trip between finding a vulnerability and actually deploying a fix involves multiple people, multiple handoffs, and multiple opportunities for things to stall.
Step 7: Verify, hopefully. After a fix ships, someone should verify that it actually resolved the vulnerability. In practice, this often doesn't happen until the next pen test or the next scanner run, which might be weeks or months away. During that gap, you don't actually know whether you're still exposed.
Step 8: Repeat. The next quarter, the scanners produce a fresh batch of findings. The annual pen test comes around again. Some of last year's findings are still open. New ones have appeared. The cycle continues.
This is the workflow that security teams live in. Not because they chose it, but because the tools available are all built around the same assumption: that the tool's job is to find things, and the human's job is to fix them. Every category in security—scanners, DAST, SAST, SCA, pen testing—is a detection category. None of them own the full lifecycle from exploitation to remediation.
The result is a gap between finding and fixing that most organizations never fully close. MTTR stays high. Backlogs grow. Security engineers spend their days triaging, ticketing, and following up instead of actually improving the security posture. And the metric that determines whether you get breached—how long exploitable vulnerabilities remain unfixed in production—stays stubbornly high because no single tool in the stack is responsible for driving it down.
AXR is the category for systems that own both sides. Find it, prove it's real, fix it, verify the fix. No handoffs, no tickets aging in a backlog, no six-month gap between the pen test and the patch.
Why this is possible now
Two things had to be true for AXR to work, and until recently, neither was.
First, AI had to be capable of genuine offensive security reasoning. Not running scripts—actually understanding how applications work, how authentication flows can be subverted, how multiple low-severity issues chain into a critical exploit. General-purpose models got partway there. Purpose-built models like our MF-1, trained on vulnerability research and real-world attack data, go the rest of the way.
Second, AI had to be capable of reliable remediation. Writing a patch that fixes a vulnerability without breaking application functionality is hard. It requires understanding the codebase, the vulnerability, and the intended behavior all at once. Two years ago, AI couldn't do this consistently. Today, our agents generate validated patches, open pull requests with full context, and re-test to verify the fix.
Neither capability alone is enough. Exploitation without remediation is just a pen test report. Remediation without exploitation is guesswork. AXR is what happens when both capabilities exist in the same system, operating continuously.
What this changes
For security teams, AXR changes the daily work. Instead of managing a dozen detection tools and manually chasing fixes, you deploy agents that handle the full lifecycle. Your role shifts from operating tooling to setting policy, reviewing output, and making the strategic decisions that actually need a human.
For organizations, AXR changes the math. Mean time to remediation drops from weeks to hours. Coverage becomes continuous instead of annual. And your security capacity scales with agents, not headcount.
For the industry, AXR fills a gap that has existed as long as the industry has. There are analyst quadrants for every detection tool imaginable. There is no quadrant for systems that exploit and remediate autonomously. We think there will be.
